How to Set Up GoHighLevel for a Local Business (2026 Step-by-Step)
Updated October 17, 2026 · Some links may be affiliate links. How we make money.
In short: Set up HighLevel in this order: sub-account, business profile, phone number, A2P 10DLC texting registration, email sending domain, booking calendar, pipeline, missed-call text back, review requests, then lead forms. Do it in that order because texting needs an approved A2P registration, and the business details carriers check come from your profile and website. A single local business usually only needs Starter ($97/month or $970/year, 14-day free trial, plus usage charges for phone, SMS, email and some AI). Pricing and menu paths checked on HighLevel's site and help center on October 17, 2026.
HighLevel (often called GoHighLevel or GHL) can run your leads, texting, booking calendar, follow-ups and review requests from one login. But a new account starts out as a blank toolkit. Owners who click around without a plan usually get stuck: texts that never send, emails that land in spam, and automations that double-text customers.
This guide is the setup order we recommend for a contractor, cleaner or other local service business. Each step uses the menu paths in HighLevel’s own help center, linked as we go. Menus move around, so if a label doesn’t match what you see, search the help center for that step.
Pricing and steps were checked against HighLevel’s pricing page and help center on October 17, 2026. Nothing here is legal advice.
Before you start: pick the plan and gather your details
- Plan. HighLevel’s pricing page lists Starter at $97/month or $970/year with 3 sub-accounts, unlimited contacts and unlimited users, and a 14-day free trial on every plan. HighLevel’s own FAQ calls Starter a fit for “a single business owner.” Phone numbers, SMS, email and premium AI are billed by usage on top. Start a 14-day HighLevel trial ↗ (affiliate link)
- Business details. Have your exact legal business name and EIN (as shown on IRS records), your registered address, a live website with a Privacy Policy and Terms page, and access to your domain’s DNS settings and your Google Business Profile.

Step 1: Create your sub-account
HighLevel accounts have an agency level and sub-accounts underneath it. Your business lives in a sub-account, and that’s where you’ll do almost all of your work.
- From the agency view, start creating a new sub-account. To begin from a pre-built template instead, go to Account Snapshots and click Create New Account next to the snapshot.
- On supported plans, HighLevel may ask what type of account you’re setting up (a client’s account or your own). Pick the option that matches your situation.
- Fill in the business information and click Add Sub-Account.
A snapshot loads its funnels, workflows, calendars and settings into the new account, and HighLevel says it can’t be “unloaded” afterward. If you aren’t sure what’s inside one, start fresh. Source: Create a sub-account using a snapshot and Agency sub-accounts explained.
Step 2: Fill in the business profile
Inside the sub-account, go to Settings > Business Profile (it’s the first settings page). HighLevel says these settings apply to the entire sub-account. Fill in:
- General information: logo, business name, email, phone, website.
- Physical address and business time zone: get the time zone right before you build anything time-based, like reminders or scheduled texts.
- Business information: legal entity type, industry, registration ID and regions of operation. HighLevel uses these for compliance and carrier approvals.
- Authorized representative: the person carriers can contact to verify the business.
- Contact deduplication: decide whether email or phone is the main field for matching repeat leads, so the same customer doesn’t become three contacts.

Step 3: Add a phone number and forward calls
- Go to Settings > Phone System, then Add Number > Add Phone Number.
- Filter by country or area code. A local area code usually makes sense for a local business.
- Pick a number and click Proceed to Buy.
- To ring your cell, open the number’s three-dot menu > Edit Configuration, enter the forwarding number and save.

Step 4: Register for A2P 10DLC (do this early)
U.S. carriers require A2P 10DLC registration for business texts sent from standard 10-digit numbers. HighLevel’s help center says this covers appointment reminders, customer-care messages and marketing texts. Until you’re approved, don’t plan on texting customers from HighLevel. Approval can take a while, so start it on day one.
Where: Settings > Phone System > Trust Center.
How it works:
- Brand. This is who is sending. Use Standard Brand if you have an EIN. Use Sole Proprietor only if you have no EIN or registered business. Enter your legal name and EIN exactly as they appear on IRS records.
- Campaign. This is what you send and how people agree to receive it: the use case, a description, realistic sample messages, your website, your opt-in method, and links to your Privacy Policy and Terms.
- Run the Review Application compliance check and fix anything it flags. Then submit.
- After approval, go to Settings > Phone System > Phone Numbers and confirm your number shows the green A2P Verified label. If it doesn’t, link the number to the approved campaign.
What carriers look for on your website and forms (from HighLevel’s A2P guidance):
- SMS consent checkboxes are never pre-checked and always optional, even when the phone field is required.
- Separate checkboxes for marketing texts and non-marketing texts (like appointment reminders).
- A visible Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions link in the footer of every form.
- Campaign descriptions that match the checkbox wording and your actual business.
Fees: HighLevel lists one-time registration and vetting charges plus a recurring monthly campaign fee. Amounts change, so check the current fee article inside HighLevel. Toll-free numbers skip A2P but go through a separate toll-free verification.

Step 5: Set up email with a dedicated sending domain
By default, HighLevel sends email through shared infrastructure. Its help center says new sub-accounts on a shared domain get the sending address rewritten, so your address shows up as something like you+yourbusiness.com on HighLevel’s shared mg.msgsndr.com domain. A dedicated sending domain fixes that and improves deliverability.
- Go to Settings > Email Services > Dedicated Domain and IP and click Add Domain.
- Enter a subdomain you don’t use for anything else, such as
mg.yourbusiness.com, and click Add & Verify. - Add the DNS records HighLevel shows at your registrar (HighLevel can auto-configure some providers), then click Verify Records. HighLevel says propagation can take up to 24 hours.
- Open the three-dot menu, choose Set Headers, and enter your From Name and From Email.
Two tips from HighLevel’s docs: warm up a brand-new domain before emailing a big list, and keep your reply-to on your normal inbox so replies still reach you. If HighLevel shows a “Domain already pointing to email server!” error, the domain has existing MX or SPF records connected to another service. HighLevel says to remove those records before connecting.

Step 6: Set up your booking calendar
- Go to Calendars > Calendar Settings and click + New Calendar.
- Choose a type. Personal Booking works for one-on-one estimates and calls. HighLevel also offers other types, such as service, event and collective calendars.
- Give it a friendly name, choose the host, check the URL, set the appointment length and your available hours, then click Confirm.
- Under the Connections tab, connect your personal calendar so bookings don’t double up. Add a video tool under Video Conferencing if you do virtual consults.
- Add reminders: Automation > Create Workflow > Recipe > Appointment Confirmation + Reminder, edit the messages, then Publish and save.
- Click Share in the calendar header to copy the booking link or embed code for your website.
Even if you work solo, HighLevel recommends adding yourself as a team member under Settings > My Staff. Source: Set up a booking calendar.
Step 7: Build a simple pipeline
A pipeline shows where every lead stands. Go to Opportunities > Pipelines > Create New Pipeline, name it, add stages and save.
Keep the first version short. For a contractor, a starting point could be: New Lead → Contacted → Estimate Scheduled → Estimate Sent → Won / Lost. That’s our suggestion, not a HighLevel default, so match it to how you actually sell.
To fill the pipeline automatically, create a workflow with the Form Submitted (or Customer Booked Appointment) trigger and a Create/Update Opportunity action pointing to the right stage. Remember to publish the workflow. Drafts don’t run.

Step 8: Turn on missed-call text back
This is often the fastest win for a busy trade business. When you can’t pick up, the caller gets a text so the lead doesn’t move on to the next company.
- Go to Settings > Phone System > Voice > Voicemail & Missed Call Text Back.
- Check Enable Missed Call Text Back, click Customize and write the message. Keep it short and say who you are.
- Send yourself a test, then Save.
- Set the incoming call timeout. HighLevel says 10 to 20 seconds is typically recommended. Too long delays the text, and too short cuts off calls you would have answered.
Watch out: HighLevel says the built-in feature sends a text for every missed call, even when the same person calls several times in a row. To avoid double-texting, HighLevel suggests customizing its workflow recipe instead, for example with a wait step or tags for the first and second call. The text also needs an SMS-eligible (A2P-verified) number to send.
Source: Configure missed call text back. For other ways to do this (AI receptionists, Jobber, Twilio), see our missed-call text back setup for contractors.
Step 9: Connect Google and automate review requests
- Connect your Google Business Profile: Settings > Integrations > Google Business Profile > Connect. Sign in with a Google account that has Owner or Manager access to the profile, pick your location and confirm. The profile must already be verified with Google.
- Turn on review requests in the sub-account settings, and customize the SMS and email wording if you like.
- Send requests by hand from Quick Actions or Reputation > Requests, or automatically with the Send Review Request workflow action (SMS or email), for example after a job is marked done.
Once connected, HighLevel says new Google reviews sync into Conversations so you can reply from one place. Sources: Integrate Google Business Profile and How to send review requests. Need wording? Use our review request text templates, and see how to get more Google reviews.
Step 10: Build your lead form
- Go to Sites > Forms and click + Create New Form (blank or from a template).
- Add only the fields you need, such as name, phone, email, service needed and message. Mark the important ones required.
- Add the two optional, unchecked SMS consent checkboxes and the Privacy Policy and Terms links from Step 4.
- Under Notifications, set an internal email alert so someone sees each submission. You can also add an auto-responder email to the person who filled it out.
- Save, then submit a test and check the Submissions tab.
- Click Integrate to copy the embed code for your website or a direct link.
Then connect it to Step 7: a Form Submitted workflow that creates the opportunity and starts your follow-up. Only text people who checked the matching consent box. Source: Create a contact form in HighLevel. Follow-up ideas: lead follow-up automation for local service businesses.
Common setup mistakes
- Starting A2P last. Everything that texts (missed-call text back, reminders, review requests) depends on it. Start it on day one.
- Brand details that don’t match IRS records. HighLevel lists a legal name or EIN mismatch as a common reason brands get rejected.
- Pre-checked or required SMS consent boxes. HighLevel’s A2P guidance says consent must be optional and unchecked.
- Submitting a second campaign while the first is still “Pending.” HighLevel says to wait for the review to finish.
- Approved campaign, but the number isn’t linked. Check for the green A2P Verified label on the number.
- Sending email without a dedicated domain, or blasting a big list from a brand-new domain before warming it up.
- Leaving missed-call text back on its defaults and double-texting repeat callers.
- Publishing nothing. Workflows saved as drafts don’t run.
- Building ten automations at once. Get missed-call text back, new-lead follow-up and review requests working first, then add more.
- Expecting a field service app. For crew scheduling and invoicing, pair HighLevel with something like Jobber. See GoHighLevel vs Jobber.
- Forgetting usage costs. Texts, calls, email and premium AI are billed on top of the plan, so check your usage in the first month.

FAQ
How do I set up a GoHighLevel account for my own business?
Start the 14-day trial, then create a sub-account for your business from the agency view. You can start it fresh or from a snapshot (a pre-built template under Account Snapshots). Inside the sub-account, fill in Settings > Business Profile first, then add a phone number, register for A2P 10DLC texting, and connect an email sending domain. HighLevel's pricing page says Starter includes 3 sub-accounts, which is enough for one local business.
How do I set up email in GoHighLevel?
Go to Settings > Email Services > Dedicated Domain and IP, click Add Domain, and enter a subdomain such as mg.yourbusiness.com. Add the DNS records HighLevel shows at your domain registrar, click Verify Records (HighLevel says propagation can take up to 24 hours), then use the three-dot menu > Set Headers to set your From Name and From Email. Your reply-to address can still be your main inbox.
How do I set up a calendar on GoHighLevel?
Go to Calendars > Calendar Settings, click + New Calendar and choose a calendar type (Personal Booking for one-on-one appointments). Set the name, host, URL, appointment length and available hours, then click Confirm. Connect your personal calendar under the Connections tab, add the Appointment Confirmation + Reminder workflow recipe, and use the Share button to copy the booking link or embed code.
Do I need A2P 10DLC registration to text customers from HighLevel?
Yes, if you text U.S. recipients from a standard 10-digit local number. HighLevel's help center says registration is done under Settings > Phone System > Trust Center: you register a Brand (who is sending) and a Campaign (what you send and how people opt in). Toll-free numbers use a separate toll-free verification process. Registration and monthly campaign fees apply; check the current amounts inside HighLevel.
Which HighLevel plan does a local business need?
Usually Starter. On October 17, 2026, HighLevel's pricing page listed Starter at $97/month or $970/year with 3 sub-accounts, unlimited contacts and unlimited users, plus a 14-day free trial. Unlimited ($297/month) and Pro ($497/month) mainly add unlimited sub-accounts and agency rebilling and SaaS features. Phone, SMS, email and premium AI are billed by usage on every plan.
Does HighLevel replace my field service app?
Usually not. HighLevel is strongest at lead capture, follow-up, texting, booking and reviews. Apps like Jobber are better at crew scheduling, job costing and invoicing. Many contractors run both.
